HUMBLE CUP COFFEE CO.
SUN, MAR 3
I like Humble Cup Coffee Company from the moment that I walk in. On a dreary Sunday afternoon, natural light still illuminates the space with its many windows. The blue and neutrals of the color palette, the leather chairs and sofas, the plants and exposed brick combine to create a coffee-scented haven, complete with books artfully arranged along the window ledge.
With such a good first impression - a respite from the dreary weather outdoors - I wish emphatically that the coffee would live up to the ambiance of the place. One sip of my vanilla latte settled that question: bliss. Properly done foam, just sweet enough. Third test: the vanilla sugar croissant I've chosen is also surprisingly good. No longer crispy on the outside, it is nevertheless sweet, buttery, and delicious. In addition to this and other pastry options provided by Poppyseeds, they also have items from Virtuoso (a Waxhaw bakery of superlative pastry genius.)

I settle into my comfortable seat on the corner couch and take in the atmosphere; young families come and go, a couple of women catch up over a cup of coffee, and a few men with laptops and large headphones use the tables for a coworking space. The enthusiastic conversation of small children can sometimes be heard over the hissing of the espresso machine, but the separate small playroom off the main keeps the noise below a distracting level.
Local art takes up space on the walls of exposed brick, and I briefly wish I had the money to splash out on the four foot pastel canvas of the Charlotte skyline. This is the kind of space that makes me think how lovely it would be to own a small coffee shop in that idle way of people who are not entrepreneurs. And then I remember that I worked in just such a coffee shop, and I much prefer sitting quietly, sipping my latte on my comfortable couch and casually observing the baristas go about their work.
